Applying For a New Job

Work History
Job applications always have a space for your job history. If you are applying for a job where you will also be turning in your resume, make sure that your work history matches what is listed on your resume. If you are not submitting a resume, then bring a detailed list of your past jobs with you so you do not have to guess at phone numbers and dates of employments.
If you have a checkered work history, have been fired from a job, or have quit several jobs, you need to have reasons for these things. If you left a job to go back to school, this is seen as a good reason for leaving a job. If you were fired, however, it may be harder to explain. Never speak badly about your former employer; instead, state that is was not a positive working environment or that your department was downsizing.
Applying For a New Job: Salary Requirements
There is a question on all job application forms (and in most interviews) that makes even the most confident person groan in dismay: “What are your salary requirements?” Answering this question is tricky: if you ask for too little, the company will hire you because you are a bargain and have under-bid their normal salary for the position. If you ask for too much, you may not be considered as a candidate.
The best thing to do is to look at your current position in relation to your potential position. If you are applying for a job with similar responsibilities, ask for approximately the same amount or slightly higher. If you will be taking on a lot more work, ask for a substantially raised salary. Also, research what the job normally pays in same-sized companies, and ask for that approximate pay range.
Posting Your Resume Online

One way a job seeker can reach a large number of employers is by posting their resume online. This can be done on a personal website or by entering the resume in a database managed by websites which host job advertisements such as monster.com or hotjobs.yahoo.com. Having web resume services available online can provide a great deal of exposure for a job seeker but it can also create some unique problems as well. This article will discuss some of the unique concerns when posting a resume online and will also provide a few tips for how job seekers should go about posting their resume online.
One of the biggest concerns in regards to posting a resume online is valid for job seekers who are currently implored. This is the concern that current employer will encounter the online resume and learn the employee is seeking a new job. There is certainly nothing wrong with employees seeking out other possible jobs, however, most employees do not wish to make it common knowledge when they are considering leaving their company. Fortunately many of these job posting website realize this is a concern and have provided options for these job seekers to remain anonymous. In most cases information such as the name, address and current employer will be kept confidential. This allows the job seeker to search for jobs without the current employer accidentally stumbling upon the employees resume online.
Another concern job seekers may have when posting their resume online is receiving contacts from those who they are not interested in hearing from. While it is true that job seekers are posting their resumes for exposure this does not mean they want to be contacted by job search agencies or individuals who do not have an available job for which the job seeker is qualified for or interested in. Again, many job posting websites realize this is a concern for job seekers and provide some forms of protection for these job seekers. Specifically some job posting websites may allow the users to specify which types of agencies they are accepting inquiries from, the locations they are interested in finding a job in and the type of employers they are seeking. For example a user may be able to specify they are not interested in being contacted by job placement agencies.
When job seekers are posting their resume online they may want to follow a few basic guidelines. Obviously the resume that is posted online should be carefully edited to ensure it is free of typographical errors. It should also be reviewed to make sure it highlights the skills and previous work experience of the job seeker. The job seeker should also make sure the information on the available is accurate and not misleading.
Job seekers posting resumes online may also wish to keep the resume fairly generic so they can use it to apply for a number of jobs without making major changes to the resume each time they apply. Some of the available job posting websites allow the user to store more than one resume in the database. When this is possible the user should take advantage of this opportunity to create resumes which are more tailored for different types of jobs. Most of these websites will not allow the user to store an infinite number of resumes online so the user will likely still want to have one generic resume stored in the database. Then they can replace other tailored resume after a sufficient amount of time has passed and the user is fairly sure he is not being seriously considered for the position for which he applied.
Another important resume tip is to make sure your most valuable skills are really showcased when you post a resume online. This is especially true for websites which only allow you to store one resume in the database. The job seeker should carefully consider the skills necessary for the type of position he is seeking and make sure the resume shows how the potential employee has demonstrated these skills in the past.

For many job hunters a career is much more than a job, it means that the person is involved and dedicated to their work and actually enjoys the challenges and rewards that the work has to offer. One of the best ways to find the perfect career opportunity is to figure out what you really would like to do. Many times we choose a job based on proximity, salary or schedule. Finding the perfect career opportunity takes more work, don’t just settle for the first job you are offered, work hard to find the position that you always dreamed of.
Another great tip is to network with people in the area that you would like to work with, knowing when opportunities arise is half the battle. If you are actively searching for a career and not just complacent in your job, you can usually land a great career opportunity in 6 month to a year period of time.
You might also want to try career placement services. Many placement services deal in specific areas of expertise. If you are looking to find the perfect career opportunity, take a look at the above tips.
Using Employment Websites For Job Searching

Employment websites are becoming increasingly popular. Websites such as monster.com and hotjobs.yahoo.com bring employers and job seekers together. Monster and HotJobs are just two examples of the many job search engines available to online job seekers. By using these websites, job seekers can put themselves in connection with virtually thousands of potential employers. However, just because these websites supply the user with access to potential employers there is no guarantee the job seeker will find a job through one of these websites. There are some tips that can give the job seeker a better chance at being selected for interview and even getting hired for a job. This article will provide some of these tips to help the reader stand out from the crowd of other prospective employees who are using the same website.
Employment websites put job seekers in connection with thousands of potential employers. However, they also put potential employers in connection with thousands of job seekers so those who are really serious about wanting to find a job have to know how to stand out from the crowd before they even meet the potential employer. The best way to do this is with a resume that is really polished. Job seekers should invest as much time as necessary to really fine tune their resume to not only showcase their previous work experience but also define their qualifications and skills. The resume should also be crafted to define the type of job the user is seeking. This is important because job seekers who do not do this will not stand out from the other qualified applicants.
It is also important to create a unique cover letter for each job application. Doing this makes it obvious that the job seeker is really interested in the position and not just sending a cookie cutter cover letter to every potential employer listed on the website. In the cover letter the user should clearly state why he is the right candidate for that particular job. This can be accomplished by carefully reviewing the required skills listed in the job advertisement and highlighting how the applicant has demonstrated these skills in past work experiences. The user should also mention the exact position the applicant is applying for and the name of the company to make the letter more personal and specific.
Users who rely on employment websites to find potential employers should also realize the competition, especially in this economy, is going to be stiff for every available job. For this reason it is critical to pay close attention to the details of the job advertisement. Care should be taken to note the qualifications and applicants should only apply if they are a suitable match for the employer. This will save the employer and the job seeker a great deal of time because the employer will not have to wade through resumes from under qualified candidates and the job seeker will not waste time crafting a cover letter for a job he is not qualified to perform. Perhaps in a stronger economy employers may be willing to take a chance on an under qualified candidate but this is not likely with the current unemployment rate.
Finally, when using unemployment websites to find potential employers, the job seeker should be thoroughly familiar with how the website works before they begin applying for positions. This is important because potential employers can make a number of mistakes which negatively impact their chances of getting the job if they do not follow instructions carefully. For example a company may list their name, website and contact information but may prefer applicants to apply through the employment website. Applicants who bypass the application link on the employment website and send their resume directly to the potential employer are likely to have their application discarded before it even reaches the hiring manager. Likewise some employees may ask candidates to include specific information with the application and those who do not include this information may be immediately disqualified from consideration. For these reasons job seekers should understand how the employment websites work and should follow all instructions included in the job advertisement.
Tips for Searching and Finding a Job Online

The Internet is a great source for those who are looking to change careers or for finding a job. Job seekers may be unsure of where to start their job source. They may also not understand how to apply for jobs online. Fortunately it is not very difficult to find a job online if the job seeker knows what they are doing. With so many job search websites out there and literally thousands of jobs posted online every day the process of finding a job online can seem extremely daunting.
The best tip for job seekers who are hoping to find a job online is to be persistent. This is one aspect in which searching for a job online is no different than searching for a job through more traditional methods. It is unrealistic to expect your dream job to be just sitting there waiting for you the minute you log onto your first job search website. It is certainly possible that you will get lucky and this will happen but it is not likely. For this reason you should be prepared to spend a great deal of time searching for jobs online before you find the right job. You should also be prepared to not be hired for the first opportunity you find.
Competition for jobs offered online is very high especially in today’s economy with the unemployment rate so high. For every job posted online there may be hundreds, if not thousands, of applications from highly qualified candidates. For this reason it is very important to make a really good first impression with your application materials. This may include your resume, cover letter and any other forms required by the potential employer. You should make sure all of these materials are free of errors, highlight the necessary skills you possess and really highlight the reasons why you are a well qualified candidate for this particular job. Resumes and cover letters should not be generic. Instead they should always be tailored specifically for the position the job seeker is applying for.
It is also very important to realize that just because a job search is being conducted online it does not mean the job seeker can be too casual in his approach to applying for open jobs. He may be able to search for jobs from his home office and in his pajamas but all communication with potential employers should be completely professional. It may be tempting to take a more relaxed approach when sending emails to a potential employer because emails are not usually as formal as other types of communication. However, during the process of a job search you should avoid doing this because it is not considered an acceptable practice and it may result in you not being seriously considered for a job you really want.
When searching for jobs through online resources it is very important to be creative in your thinking. Years ago when job seekers relied almost exclusively on newspapers for job advertisements it was fairly easy to scan all of the available job openings. However, with the sheer magnitude of job openings posted online this is simply not possible. For this reasons job seekers have to really know how to find jobs for which they are well qualified. Searching for jobs by title, keyword and skills are all useful practices. Most job seekers forget to use keywords related to the job they are seeking and their skill set but doing this may result in the job seeker missing out on a lot of opportunities. Becoming a little more creative in your thinking, noting important keywords used in the type of job advertisements that interest you and applying these keywords to your own job searches will result in greater success in your online job search.
Networking Online For Your Job Search

One of the best things the Internet does is enable people to connect. There are websites which put those who share career interests in contact with each other. Through these websites Internet users can communicate with others in their own industry or in an industry they hope to break into. These websites are essentially the cocktail parties of our generation. However, users of these websites should exercise caution when using the Internet to network. This article will provide some useful tips for how to successfully network online for the purpose of finding a job.
One very important tip we can offer for networking online is to keep all communications professional. This is very important because Internet users never really know who they are going to encounter when networking online. Failing to maintain an air of professionalism while networking online can really negatively impact an Internet user’s chance of landing a job because they will not be taken seriously. Another reason why it is so important to avoid unprofessional behavior when networking online is it may be possible for potential employers to access these unprofessional communications for years to come. Unlike an inappropriate comment made at a cocktail party which may be forgotten over time online comments may be available for all to see for awhile to come.
Another tip for networking online for the purpose of finding a job is to cast a wide net. Internet users should not be afraid to reach out in as many ways as possible to network with those in the same career field. This does not mean you should register with every career networking website around and begin posting your contact information and career details with reckless abandon. However, it also does not mean you should be overly cautious and optimistic about the types of contacts you make. Obviously you should make efforts to network with those in your direct industry but you should also consider networking with those in related fields or fields which often work in close conjunction with members of your field. This is important because these individuals are likely doing the same type of networking and can put you in contact with influential people in your own industry.
It is also extremely important to avoid burning bridges when you are networking online. It may be tempting to cut ties with someone who has said something negative about you or someone who has offended you in some way. This can be tempting because the Internet is so expansive that you may think you will not likely encounter this person again. However, even though the Internet is enormous the size of your industry is a greater indication of whether or not you will encounter these individuals again. If you are in a relatively small industry it is very likely you will encounter this person again and again during the course of your career. It is also likely that you have common friends, acquaintances and even colleagues. For this reason you should avoid these types of relationship breaks.
When networking online you should always remember to avoid speaking negatively about your previous employers. This is a problem many job seekers make and it can really make a bad first impression on potential employers or on those who may be in a position to put you in connection with influential people in your industry.
Finally, those who are networking online for purposes of career advancement should be careful of networking websites which allow users to remain anonymous to a certain degree. This is important because it is possible you may encounter someone from your own company who is also networking online. This can be damaging to your career because if your company learns you are looking for a new job, it can negatively impact your job status.
How To Turn A Job Loss Into A Job Improvement

Losing your job or becoming unemployed deals a gut-wrenching blow. Your first thoughts will probably be, “What am I going to do now? How will I be able to survive?” Then while you’re focused on those concerns, you may detect a change in mood. Not the sadness you might have expected. Worse. For some who find themselves unexpectedly out of the work force, despair overwhelms them. Is it any wonder? How are you supposed to deal with the mortgage or rent that’s due? The food and utility bills?
First, if you find those feelings of despair are overwhelming you, be sure to go and see your doctor right away. Don’t put it off, telling yourself it’s not important. Consult with medical professionals as soon as possible. Looking after yourself and your emotional health is the ONLY issue that should matter in the big picture. You have to have your health if you want to get back on track.
Once you make sure your physical and emotional health are sound, you’ll be ready to look ahead. Hopefully there’s a severance package from your former employer or unemployment insurance to tide you over until you secure another job. For the fortunate, they’re able to find a suitable job quite quickly. Not everyone is that lucky!
And some of your friends may say “There’s a better opportunity just waiting for you!” This may well turn out to be true but right now, hearing those cliches only causes you to feel unkindly toward the speaker. Yes, there are many who lose one job and then find something even better. Hopefully, it WILL happen for you. But at the present you just want work!
Steps to take after job loss
1. Network. Talk to everybody you make contact with. Forget being bashful. Talk. Explain your situation. Have cards made up that list your contact numbers. Give them out to everyone you talk with. You’ll never know when the most unlikely person will know someone who knows someone…
2. Have resume updated. If you feel your resume isn’t good enough, search for local employment agencies. Take advantage of all services they offer. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much help you’ll be given, when you appreciate the opportunities that are offered to you.
3. Join job-finding clubs. Social contact with others going through the same thing is crucial. You might get valuable knowledge from their social network that you wouldn’t have found out about any other way.
4. Look into upgrading. Learning new skills or refreshing present abilities never hurt anyone! There are many good quality courses available through the internet. The internet is a life-saver for the unemployed. You’ll learn about ideas you hadn’t heard of before. You can post your resume online. You can look for employers wanting to hire someone just like you!
5. Consider a new trend called “Homeshoring”. Companies are hiring employees, IT specialists, customer service reps, virtual agents, etc. who prefer to work at home. Real companies, with names you’d recognize, are turning away from outsourcing in foreign countries and are now offering Americans legitimate work from home employee positions.
Losing your livelihood can be really hard to take. To overcome one of life’s whammies, you must become active in your search for new employment. It truly is a job in itself. With this positive attitude and looking after your health, what seemed like devastation, could actually become a new beginning!

It doesn’t matter what type of industry in which you are trying to find employment, you cannot succeed unless you have the right attributes for the job and then the means to display your talents and achievements when job hunting.
Sadly, there is no dream formula to help you land your dream job. By following a few job hunting tips you can take a giant step in the pursuit of that dream job and therefore enhance your prospects of success.
The first thing in looking for a job is to know yourself well. Know your skills and attributes, and search yourself. What jobs have you had in the past that you excelled in? Not only excelled in but did you enjoy the job. What jobs should you steer clear of, you may think that you would like to do a particular job but would you be suited to that job. Something that is absolute basic job hunting.
You will never see an advertisement in the newspaper that says “ Wanted 1 (your name) no experience necessary”, offering a huge pay packet to boot. If you are single minded enough to do what ever it takes to secure your dream job, research it, will you need to further your education.
You should research the differing types of opportunities available in your location, perhaps the position for which you are eminently suited is not available in your area. If this is the case, and you are determined to gain that dream job, perhaps a relocation is in order.
Some times you can’t see the forest for the trees, other people may see qualities and skills in you that you can’t see yourself, this is the reason some job seekers go to a professional. An employment consultant may be able to help you formulate a truthful but professional view of your capabilities.
If a particular job attracts you but you don’t have any experience, offer your services for free, just to gain the experience. Once you have some experience in that position, and if you excel in it, the employer may offer you a paying position. If not, at least you have gathered some experience which will assist in applying for other positions.
In this current economic climate, job hunting is not an easy task. It is a competitive market. Your skills and experience will be put to the blow torch. Your resume must be truthful but impressive. Before you submit an application be sure that it is the best application possible, a shabby application will elicit a shabby response.
Once you have applied for the position you have one more hurdle to overcome, the Interview. Prepare for the interview, research the company. Practice or role play the interview, become comfortable with the process. When you are comfortable with the interview process you will come across as a professional who is suited to the position which you are applying for.

Job hunting abroad can be both an opportunity and an adventure. There are hurdles to overcome when searching for the right job abroad. Let’s take going to Madrid, Paris, Rome or London for example. It’s not enough to just send resumes, the idea should be “get the luggage and get on the plane.”
Getting a work permit is one obstacle in Europe. To stay there for an extended time, a residence permit is needed. This an only be granted once a working permit has been granted. Companies only provide non-European workers their work permits if they prove that there are no qualified European for the position. This is tough since the European Employment Services allows different companies to recruit prospects in eighteen European Economic Area countries. Remember that an ideal candidate is one who is able to speak the native language of a specific city other than English.
If you have your eye on Spain, a typed application letter with a resume must be prepared, including a recent photo and translated qualifications and/or copies of diplomas and other credentials. The letter must be written in a direct formal style citing the vacancy applying for. A must have for the closing should be “En espera de sus noticias, les saluda atentamente.”
In the United Kingdom, newspapers are good sources of job openings. Assorted prime papers offer complement of job vacancies like “The Guardian,” “The Daily Telegraph,” “The Times,” or the “The Independent” particularize vacancies daily. Companies are very particular regarding the reason you are applying. Research on their product offers, location of branches/offices, etc. There must be a reason why there is an interest to work for a specific company.
The application for jobs in Italy should also consist of a typed application letter. This should be formal and conventional in form. Using the Italian language is a must when explaining the intriguing reason for application. Diplomas and other credentials including impressive list of references should be handy during the initial interview. There are three to four expected follow-up interviews including a psychometric test. Put emphasis on personal appearance before the interview especially how the dress as this shows the concern in getting the job being applied for.
The average job search abroad ranges between six to twelve months. Experts consider searching for a job a full time job itself. Attending career counseling is helpful if unsure on what to do. There are a lot of great career resources who can give advise that best fits ones interests and passion.
